Viper - Wide Area Paging

iStock_000005617689XSmallThe VIPER system is a robust and flexible alerting system that is compatible with the commonly used POCSAG and FLEX protocols. It is a scalable solution catering from the small local area to whole of state coverage.

Infostream specialises in the development, installation and support of turnkey paging systems for its customers. Infostream provide comprehensive training and migration services to enable our customers to seamlessly migrate their existing systems to the advanced VIPER paging system

Our unique VIPER solution is the nerve centre of our emergency services solution.

Organisations like the Victorian Emergency Services rely on this software to co-ordinate all of their messaging in conjunction with the Xstream wireless alerting device.

The VIPER system has been designed to avoid the complexity and often steep learning curves associated with proprietary software. A simple web interface provides access to functions such as Send Message, Message Verification, Moves and Changes, and System Reports.

The key features of VIPER include:

Feature

Summary

Air Interface Protocols

POCSAG (512, 1200 and 2400 baud)
FLEX (1600, 3200 and 6400 baud)
XCODE (Infostream proprietary)

Capacity

VIPER 1 – up to 1000 users
VIPER 10 – up to 10000 users*
VIPER 1000 – 1000000+ users

Terminal compatibility

Compatibility with many different message terminals including pagers, fixed receivers (for siren activation, electronic sign control etc), and vehicular receivers

Distribution network

Internet Protocol (IP) or Serial Links, which can be implemented via terrestrial links, other wireless transmission technology or satellite.

Flexible Group alerting

VIPER supports group alerting using a pager-linking model which provides very flexible and easy top manage pager programming.

Over-the-Air pager management

Infostream pagers may be programmed and configured over the air via VIPER.

Reliability

Simplex System – 99.9% *availability through to;
Duplex (Hot Standby) System – 99.999% availability***

Management Interfaces

Web-based local management
SNMP alarms to upstream management systems

Optional voice interface

ISDN Primary Rate voice interface with optional PIN based authentication for message initiation.**

Optional Message Confirmation

Each VIPER base station is capable of receiving the transmitted messages off-air for both monitoring and message confirmation.***

Optional encryption

When used with Infostream pagers, VIPER can encrypt messages before transmission for high message security.***

The Infostream solution details comprise two main components; the paging terminal and the base station or transmitters. The details are;

The paging terminal comprises;

  1. A fault tolerant application server – comprises a web server for delivery of the user interface.
  2. A database server stores the details of the users and messages allowing for provision of the paging solution.
  3. A CISCO IVR/PBX gateway (optional) – handles the incoming calls using voice prompts, which interact with the application server to send messages. This can be optionally upgraded to two units to improve redundancy in the solution.
  4. Backup of message and system data via e.g. DVD drives.

b. Standard Interfaces

Infostream's paging system provides three main interfaces;

  1. HTTP – this provides for any network aware system to be connected to the paging system. The connection provides for a simple interface, as in the case of a web browser
  2. ISDN – this allows a connection into most vendor PBX's, providing up to 30 channels. Most PBX's allow the ability for traffic distribution over several ISDN connections, giving automatic fail over capability. This interface alls for DTMF input from either Voice or Tone prompts.
  3. TAP – the serial server

c. Dedicated Network focused on Transmission Reliability
The base station layout and network is the key to the transmission of the messages

The base station comprises;

  1. Cypher unit – controls when the transmitter sends messages to the air
  2. Serial port server – converts the IP based network traffic to serial traffic for interaction with the cipher unit and the transmitter. It also allows for monitoring of the network and provides status information to the Network Monitoring system located at the paging terminal location.
  3. GPS unit – provides time synchronisation of the transmitter, cipher and serial port server.
  4. Transmitter – provides RF transmission of the message from the paging terminal and incorporates an optional hot standby transmitter.
